Varanasi
At the centre of the Hindu universe, Varanasi has maintained its religious life since the sixth century BC and is one of the oldest living cities in the world. Stone steps or ghats line the entire waterfront along the Ganges. So many typical images of India are ones often taken from boats on the Ganges looking at the ghats in the rising sunlight of morning. Many of these images here are exactly that, little snapshots of daily ablutions and worship of the Mother Ganges in the early morning. Arati ceremonies are held in the evening watched from the boats (and us on the ghats)
