Orchha Architecture

A deserted medieval town, Orchha (meaning 'hidden place') was a great place to unwind for 3 days after Delhi and Agra. In and around the sleepy village is an amazing collection of fifteen century fortifications, temples and palaces. We visited the Raj Mahal, the courtyard having 6 rooms around the Kings for each of his 6 concubines whom he visited (one each day, two on Sunday) via secret passages so as not to be seen. The Jahangir Mahal was really impressive. It was built as a welcome present for a Moghul emperor who paid a visit here in the seventeenth century. As it turned out he only stayed one night and the palace was never again live in after that one night! It is an interesting combination of Hindu and Muslim symbolism with the lotus and the domes together.
